Nearly 70,000 Rhode Islanders live in deep poverty—making less than $9,601 per year for a family of three. Many of these working poor are among the 500+ people who come to our dining hall each day for a hot meal. Amos House treats every person with respect and dignity. Amos House is a place without judgment, a place of nourishment for body and soul.

For the past 40 years Amos House has offered breakfast and lunch six days a week to men, women, and children who are homeless or struggling to make ends meet. Our executive chef, John Nelson, has been preparing these meals for over 34 years. Once a homeless alcoholic, John credits Amos House for helping him turn his life around and he is proud of his work “giving back” to his community. John is assisted in the kitchen by graduates of Amos House’s Culinary Arts Training Program and hundreds of volunteers who show up day after day to help us serve between 500 and 800 meals a day.

The soup kitchen is the point of entry for all of our services and the foundation upon which Amos House is built. We are truly a life-line to hundreds of men and women who turn to us each day; for a meal, a smile, a chance to change their lives.
